Four members of Tourism Whistler Board of Directors elected by acclamation at 2020 Annual General Meeting


Whistler, B.C. – Tourism Whistler held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, May 28, 2020. Due to COVID-19, the meeting was held electronically.

Four positions on the Tourism Whistler Board of Directors were up for election this year at the AGM; however, all four positions were elected by acclamation.

In the position of Single-Managed Hotel Lodging – Large, the successful nominee was Norman Mastalir (incumbent), General Manager of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

In the position of Multi-Managed Lodging – Village, the successful nominee was Doug Andrews, General Manager of the Listel Hotel Whistler.

In the position of Multi-Managed Lodging – Other, the successful nominee was Ian Lowe (incumbent), General Manager of the Crystal Lodge & Suites.

In the position of Director At Large, the successful nominee was Murray Lowe (incumbent – formerly sitting in Multi Managed, Village position), General Manager of the Westin Resort & Spa.

“I would like to sincerely thank all of our board members for their commitment and contributions,” said Ian Lowe, Tourism Whistler’s Board Chair. “We have a tough road ahead as we look to rebuild after the devastating impacts of COVID-19, but we are fortunate that the Tourism Whistler Board reflects a breadth of resort experience so that the various needs and interests of the organization’s diverse membership remain central to our business recovery efforts.”

Tourism Whistler is governed by a 13-member Board of Directors – seven elected and six
appointed, with 12 voting members and one Ex-Officio non-voting member.

On behalf of its members, the Board confirms the vision, mission, priorities and objectives for Tourism Whistler, and approves the strategic plan, business plan, and operating and capital budgets. The Board ensures the organization fulfills its mission and remains financially viable.

Tourism Whistler Board nominees do not have to be members of Tourism Whistler; however they must be nominated by at least two members in good standing. All elected directors serve a two-year term. The term served by the appointed directors is determined by the organizations they represent.

Following the election of the Directors at the AGM, Tourism Whistler’s President & CEO, Barrett Fisher, gave a presentation where she provided highlights from Tourism Whistler’s efforts in 2019 along with an overview of the organization’s 2019 financials and the strategic priorities and plans for 2020.

“COVID-19 has delivered a devastating blow to Whistler and the global tourism industry, but we are starting to see glimmers of hope on the horizon,” said Fisher. “With BC on the verge of entering Phase 3 of our Restart Plan, we know that Whistler, with its magnificent mountains, forests and lakes, wide open spaces, and variety of outdoor activities, will be well-positioned for attracting visitors back when the time is right. Tourism Whistler has been working diligently on our business recovery strategy, and we are committed to working with our members to ensure our return to tourism is managed thoughtfully and carefully, and balances the needs of our local businesses, guests, residents and environment. We remain committed to ensuring Whistler is the most valued, sustainable, four-season mountain destination in the world.”
