Whistler, B.C. – Tourism Whistler held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) virtually on Thursday, May 5, 2022.

Four positions on the Tourism Whistler Board of Directors were up for election this year at the AGM, all of which were filled by acclamation.

In the category of Director at Large, the successful nominee was the incumbent, Murray Lowe, General Manager of the Westin Whistler Resort & Spa.

In the category of Multi-Managed Lodging - Village, the successful nominee was the incumbent, Doug Andrews, General Manager of The Listel Hotel Whistler.

In the category of Single-Managed Lodging – Large, the successful nominee was the incumbent, Norm Mastalir, Managing Director of The Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

As well, in the vacant Appointed Whistler Blackcomb position, Rosalie Rougeot, Senior Director of Resort Marketing of Whistler Blackcomb, has been appointed.

“After facing two years of unprecedented challenges, it is a relief to be heading into the upcoming summer season with relatively ‘normal’ conditions,” said Saad Hasan, acting Chair of the Tourism Whistler Board of Directors, filling in for Norm Mastalir, Tourism Whistler’s Board Chair. “I would like to thank all of our Board members for their contributions over the past year. I am cautiously optimistic that the devastating impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic are behind us, and I know we are all looking forward to brighter, more buoyant days ahead. We are fortunate that Tourism Whistler has a Board that reflects a breadth of resort experience to ensure all member interests are well-represented as we continue to work towards business recovery.”

Tourism Whistler is governed by a 13-member Board of Directors—seven elected and six appointed, with 12 voting members and one Ex-Officio non-voting member.

On behalf of Tourism Whistler’s Members, the Board of Directors establishes the vision and mission, and approves the objectives, strategic priorities and budgets, ensuring the fulfillment of the organization’s mission and the association’s continued financial viability.

Tourism Whistler Board nominees do not have to be members of Tourism Whistler; however, they must be nominated by at least two members in good standing. All elected Directors serve a two-year term. The term served by the appointed Directors is determined by the organizations they represent.

Following the Election of Directors at the AGM, Tourism Whistler’s President & CEO, Barrett Fisher, gave a presentation where she provided an overview of Tourism Whistler’s efforts in 2021.

“Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on our industry has been incredibly difficult but guiding the destination through economic challenges is part of Tourism Whistler’s role,” said Fisher. “During these times of hardship, it is Tourism Whistler’s responsibility to analyze the threats as they arise and to identify the opportunities to drive the strongest possible results for the businesses and members we represent. While annual resort performance lagged significantly behind a typical year in 2021, we were still able to achieve some strong wins and business successes, including record room nights from the BC market, which were up 17 per cent from the previous record-setting 2020 summer season, and up 13 per cent from 2019, and achieving an average hotel occupancy of 40 per cent for October and November, surpassing fall 2020 by 14 points, and beating the 2019 fall season by 3 points.”
