Whistler, B.C. – Whistler is revving up for the much-anticipated 21st annual World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF).

The 10-day celebration of music, sport and art takes place April 8-17, and is the ultimate celebration of Whistler’s unique mountain culture.

True to the festival’s mantra, “party in April, sleep in May” the festival dishes up 10 days of non-stop entertainment, featuring top athletes pushing the limits of their sport, free daily outdoor concerts, photography showdowns, art displays, and after-dark parties.

Thanks to the stellar snowfall this season – nearly 12 metres (40 feet), and counting – there’s never been a better time to visit Whistler. Enjoy epic on-mountains conditions teamed with a huge lineup of music, sport and art at WSSF, Whistler’s unofficial wrap up party for winter and welcoming ceremony for spring.

MUSIC

The music lineup for the 2016 festival includes the FIDO Outdoor Concert Series, The END party, the Kokanee Freeride Club Series, plus various Whistler venues hosting after-dark events.

This year’s FIDO Outdoor Concert Series will feature JUNO award-winning rock-band Monster Truck, Vancouver-based elctro-group Bear Mountain, as well as performances by the five-piece indie-group Modern Space, local-favourites SkiiTour, Canadian country music star Tim Hicks as well as a set from the all-star electro-funk duo Chromeo and more. The outdoor concert series rocks Skier’s Plaza daily, check here for details.

THE END, April 16, is the ultimate end of fest party, held at the Whistler Conference Centre. This year’s lineup is hot off the press, with Case of the Mondays, Mat the Alien and Neon Steve playing before DJ duo Pendulum Set & Verse headline with their winning mix of drum and bass, break beat, even hardcore, metal and punk. The event is sure to be a sensory overload, with all the lights and illumination that you would expect. The END party is a recurrent sellout, and a festival-favourite. Let’s be honest, if you haven’t burnt the candle at both ends, you just haven’t given it your all.

SPORT

Tune in for all the sporting action at this year’s festival, from high-intensity boarderstyle and freeski events, to roller derby showdowns. WSSF presents a variety of sporting events to watch and participate in.

Join in the stroke at the International Freeski and Snowboard Asssociation event (April 6-9), where ski and snowboard competitors (12-18 years of age) take on big mountain terrain, while being scored on style, control, technique, fluidity and line choice. Earn your spot by qualifying for this event, see details here.

On April 9 the derby girls return for SPLATTERday Night Fever. Local Whistler and Squamish teams join forces to take on the Brick House Betties from Comox at the Whistler Conference Centre. Don’t miss all the thrills (and spills) at this high intensity head-to-head battle for roller derby-supremacy.

The Monster Boardercross series, April 15-16, is truly a phenomenal spectator sport – pitting four riders against each other on a winding, rolling course integrated with big slopestyle terrain features. The Monster Boardercross series will be held in the Blackcomb Terrain Park – a perfect setting to enjoy the gnarly slope-side entertainment teamed with the best views imaginable.

ART

WSSF is continually pushing the limits of creativity with exciting photography, multimedia, film and art showcases, showdowns and screenings throughout the festival.

The Olympus 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown, April 8, redefines the art of film production into its purest form through a few (not so) simple rules: shoot, edit and produce within a 100km radius of Whistler and in merely 72 hour’s, start to finish. The contest exposes fortitude, ability, speed and originality to create a 3-5 minute short film produced in record time, projected in front of 1500+ festivalgoers. See behind the scenes of last year’s showdown here.

MULTIPLICITY, April 10, presented by Mountain Life Media, has cemented its reputation as a flagship WSSF event since its inauguration in 2013. Multiplicity, as the name suggests, takes the audience through a powerful journey using various forms of multimedia to evoke strong messages. The event is as inspiring as it is entertaining, with funds being raised for the Spearhead Huts. Local Whistlerite Feet Banks will MC this entertaining evening.

Whistler Comedy Showdown, April 12, presented by Head Wound Productions, features seasoned regulars, brave newbies and the hilarious antics of Ivan Deck. At just $5 entry this is a deal not to laugh at – laughing is however encouraged (and assured) on the night.

State of the ART is the inner-physique of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, combining the mountains, riding and music to celebrate the inherent creative pulse running through the Sea to Sky Corridor. The end result being a no-rules, out-of-the-box art installation, not for the meek at heart.
