Whistler, B.C. – Visitors to Whistler can expect to see more than a few felt shamrock hats and varying shades of green garb in the resort this St. Patrick’s Day as Tourism Whistler, partnering with the Resort Municipality of Whistler, joins Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening project.

For the first time in the history of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative, Whistler will join other iconic destinations from around the globe as they cast a green light in key locations in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day.

Whistler joins seven other Canadian destinations, along with more than 70 sites around the globe, in going green on March 17.

Global Greening is an annual initiative coordinated by Tourism Ireland. The campaign welcomes a number of landmarks and iconic sites around the world as they turn green for St. Patrick’s Day, in honour of Ireland, its culture, its history and the more than 70 million Irish living around the world.

“Whistler attracts visitors from all over the world -- including Ireland,” said Tourism Whistler’s Communications Manager, Patricia Westerholm.

“We were approached by Tourism Ireland to participate in this program and we were happy to be involved,” she said.

“Any person who has spent St. Patrick’s Day in Whistler can speak to the fact that we celebrate this traditional Irish holiday as if we were all Irish – even if for only one day! This year, we’re just adding a bit more colour that everyone will be able to enjoy. The Global Greening initiative is a fun way to recognize our Irish visitors, as well as our own Irish community right here in Whistler.”

The Resort Municipality of Whistler, in support of this initiative, will turn the existing lights at the Village Gate Boulevard Inuksuk, the Sightlines Bridge and the Town Plaza Gazebo green on March 17. Whistler joins other first-timers including the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, which will light its Tower of Hope green, the Hotel de Ville de Montreal, the City Hall in St. John’s, and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Cabot Tower. Toronto City Hall, the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, and Niagara Falls (the first Canadian site to go green in 2012) all return this year.

Famous places turning green around the globe include the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza, the Sydney Opera House, the London Eye, the city of Chicago, Cape Town's Table Mountain, the Empire State Building, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disneyland, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.
